The Literacy Level of 15-year-olds Around the World
Judit Kadar-Folop
An overview of PISA What is PISA?
PISA - The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development Program for International Student Assessment - is a new collaborative effort among OECD Member countries to measure how well young adults, at age 15, approaching the end of compulsory schooling, are prepared to meet the challenges of today's societies.
PISA is a survey taken every three years and was first conducted in 2000. It assesses 15-year-old students' performance in three key domains of education: reading literacy, mathematical literacy and scientific literacy, with the primary focus shifting between these domains in every cycle. In PISA 2000, the primary focus of the survey was reading literacy whereas the other two domains were assessed with shorter tests. PISA will continue with the primary focus shifting to mathematics in 2003, to science in 2006 and back to reading in 2009. In each cycle though, all three domains will be tested. The assessment of cross-curricular competencies is being progressively integrated into PISA, beginning with an assessment of problem-solving skills in 2003.
