Thinking critically is important for students, there is no doubt. But critical thinking is at least as important for teachers. Teachers need to think about each strategy and method they employ, its appropriateness and purpose. Sometimes, modifications are called for.

As a geography teacher of the 6th and 7th grades at several schools, I observe students and their mentors apply the "cluster" strategy, mostly for study of either countries or the "Continental Geography". Both my observations and my own teaching have led me to re-think the way I use clustering. Firstly, I noticed that if we did not specify the subject matter field to be studied, i.e. the science from which the information should originate, then pupils tended to include in the cluster, knowledge that was far outside the realm of study.
