The Pyramid Story:
How to Make Writing Interesting

Olga O. Kim with Rowan E. Wagner

As a rule, writing tasks are not too popular with students. The usual school practice is to create collectively an outline for the composition, and then have students use this outline to write their papers at home or in class. Students then hand in their work to the teacher, who marks their compositions and sometimes reads out the best, or "model", papers before the class.

However, students, whose papers were not found to be model ones, often feel left out, as if their work was not worthy of note. Did they think in a wrong or displeasing way?

To stimulate interest in the process of writing itself, and at the same time to make the committing of thoughts to paper easier, the teacher should think carefully about the lesson format. The strategy we propose here helps avoid such negative emotions, and makes the process of writing interesting for the writer. We call this strategy the "pyramid story". We hope it will help others overcome at least some of the difficulties connected with teaching writing.
