Critical Education as the Basis of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy

One of the most prominent figures in the galaxy of modern, foreign pedagogues is Paulo Freire, a well-known Brazilian pedagogue, a humanitarian activist and philosopher, a man who devoted himself to education in the furthest reaches of Brazilian society. The education theory put forward by Freire is based on his firm belief in the ability of any man (however uneducated he or she is) to assess the outer world.

As the oppressed masses become critically aware of the realities of their own lives and of social life, as they uncover antagonisms to this life, as they articulate the reasons and consequences of such antagonisms, they begin to transform these realities in their practical activities. Being involved in the process of transforming the outside world, they perceive real interconnections more acutely, and their critical consciousness becomes heightened. The concept of "consciousness awakening" refers to an ever-increasing objective and critical awareness of the reality surrounding us, an awareness aimed at changing reality as we know it.
