Ode to the Cinquain

Irina Vikentyeva

The ability to sum up information, to express complex ideas, feelings and concepts in a few words, is an important skill. It requires from the learner a thoughtful response based upon a good stock of ideas. When writing a cinquain, the author synthesizes information, thus describing the essence of a notion, or reflecting upon knowledge acquired.

It is usually recommended that cinquains are used at the reflection stage. However, our experience shows that there are other possibilities as well. Let us take a look at how teachers at the Pyahklimyae gymnasium in Estonia apply this strategy to different subjects, different classrooms, and different stages of the lesson.

Using a cinquain at different stages of a lesson can serve several different aims:

  • O. Gracheva uses the cinquain at the evocation stage of her mathematics lessons. At the beginning of the lesson, before presenting the new theme, the teacher asks her students to identify the subject of the following cinquain:

Infinite, numerical,
Can be added together, compared,
Positive/negative numbers marked,
Scale.
